Doral Family Journal
Contributing writer/Journalist
Doral, Florida
María Alejandra Pulgar has been living in Doral, Florida for fourteen years.
She majored in Computer Science Engineering back in her native country Venezuela at Universidad Simon Bolivar. Upon completing her studies, she worked 10 years as an IT consultant for the Oil and Gas industry, specializing in Business Analysis, Project Planning and Controlling, Change Management and Application Development.
Since moving to the US in 2001, she divided her time between tending to her growing family and getting involved with the Doral community, mainly working on consolidating the Parent, Teacher and Students Association of the Public Schools her children attend: Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center and Ronald W. Reagan Doral Senior High School, where she served as volunteer and on several board positions over the years. This community work allowed her to know firsthand the needs of the growing Doral community and the many ways citizens could get involved for the wellbeing of their city.
Her experience with issues affecting her community and her lifelong interest in writing prompted her to start a blog on family matters on the site Examiner.com and in 2011 was invited to join the team of contributing writers for Doral Family Journal, the first online newspaper of the City of Doral, where she has focused on developing articles, in English and Spanish, intended to educate Doral residents on issues of utmost importance like education, citizenship and civic involvement. She has interviewed politicians; educators, artists, and community activists, giving special attention to the young people of the city that are making efforts to positively impact their environment in her monthly column “Young People That Change the World.”
A compilation of her published articles for Doral Family Journal can be revised at www.marialepulgar.com
With the objective of further sharing her content she has developed an online presence using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as main outlets for her publications.
She is a class of 2013 alumnus of the “City of Doral Mayor’s Citizens Government Academy,” where she deepened her knowledge of the City of Doral’s operations and procedures.
After becoming an American Citizen in November 2012, she has made an effort to prompt her fellow citizens to participate in the voting process and to become educated electors. She is steadfast in this effort due to seeing firsthand how an apathetic voting community stymied progress in her former country; by encouraging the citizens of Doral to vote, she hopes her new homeland can continue to grow through the power of an involved and united community. She covered for Doral Family Journal the Charter Amendment referendum of June 2014 and the midterm Elections in November.
In October 2014 she was invited to share her experiences on the panel of Citizenship Journalism on the event Social Media Talk Miami, that took place within the Venezuelan Art Festival 2014,
As accredited press, she covered for Doral Family Journal newspaper the Miss Universe Pageant that took place in Doral in January 2015, interviewing the contestants, transmitting the pageant online through twitter to the Doral audience and obtaining the first exclusive interview for a local newspaper of the winner Miss Paulina Vega.
Maria Alejandra Pulgar is journalist, blogger and writer by trade and talent; computer science engineering major and an active member of the community, but the role she most enjoys is being the mom to her three children, Eduardo, Isabel, and Miguel.
